Now's the Time: Kevin Mahogany

Before achieving international acclaim as a jazz vocalist, Kevin Mahogany regularly performed in a variety of contexts at Kansas City joints like Jimmy's Jigger. Plastic Sax fondly recalls his versions of hits by the Temptations, Randy Travis, Luther Vandross, Jon Hendricks and Joe Turner. Mahogany returns to Kansas City Saturday for a show at the Folly. Joe Klopus notes Mahogany's all-star band in his preview of the concert. Mahogany's sense of playfulness is shown to good effect in this video.

Sorry to report, I was underwhelmed by the Kevin Mahogany show Saturday. Drummer extraordinaire (and the reason I bought my tix) Bernard Purdie did not show (they had a decent sub), and guitarist Grant Green Jr. cut his index finger on the pre-show buffet, got stitches, and was unable to finish the show.

The Star's review concurs with your assessment, Rick. My biggest concern, however, was the apparent attempt water down Joe Turner. Just because something is fifty/sixty years old doesn't mean it wasn't wild.
