Now's the Time: Joey DeFrancesco
Organist Joey DeFrancesco returns to the Blue Room tonight. While it seems like he's been around forever, DeFrancesco is only 37. He's never been shy about acknowledging his Italian heritage; this amusing reading of "Volare" is typical. Joe Klopus provides a nice career summary of the big man.
The first time I head Joey he was only 18 and newly signed to Columbia Records. My jaw dropped at least a foot at the opening grooves--yes it was a vinyl record--at how mature he sounded even back then. There's more to tell but not enough time. Wish I had the $$ to go tonight.
