I'm not ashamed to admit that
Rob Scheps intimidates me. In addition to his imposing physical presence, Scheps brings a Bobby Knight-style intensity to the bandstand. He can be a scary dude. Scheps is also one of the greatest mainstream saxophonists I've encountered. He duets with Oregon bassist Glen Moore in the embedded clip. As Joe Klopus notes in his
weekly column, Scheps and baritone saxophonist
Frank Basile are touring with Kansas City-based musicians Roger Wilder, Bob Bowman and Brian Steever. The quintet perform Thursday, April 5, at Take Five Coffee + Bar and Saturday, April 7, at the Blue Room.
I failed to note that both Scheps and Basile will appear with Ron Carlson's band at Lucky Brewgrille in Mission on Friday, April 6.
ReplyDeleteScheps will also play with the Boulevard Big Band at Nico's 320 on Sunday, April 8.
Basile was awesome last night at Take Five - I encourage other PS readers to get on out and hear this guy while you can.
ReplyDeleteI got to hear the Basile group at University of Nebraska, Omaha a couple weeks ago. They sounded good.
ReplyDeleteFor the UNO event, printed programs were provided with multi-paragraph bios of the Basile players.
It was interesting to read in those program notes about pianist Roger Wilder of KC, that he'd taken piano instruction from the late Barry Kiner.
On YouTube if you search 'Buddy Rich', retrieval results include a mid 1980s "Larry King LIVE" clip from CNN, where Rich talks about some of the new talent in his band, citing Kiner in particular.
Thanks for your comment, Fred. We're very fortunate to have guys like Wilder in KC.
ReplyDeleteI concur with Anon 1110.
Rob is a great big bear...but a teddy bear underneath. He and Frank and the band tore it up at the Blue Room last night. the contrast between the very buttoned-down Basile and the over the top energy and emotion from Scheps was rather stark, for sure.
ReplyDeleteBob,
ReplyDeleteRob is a teddy bear to you Bob because he wants you to play his records. A teddy bear.....
