Birdland opened on 44th Street in 1981. Even so, I was filled with hometown pride that had nothing to do with Bird as I listened to the
Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra from a $30 seat at the venue's bar in Manhattan on Sunday. The three percussionists that propel the accomplished 18-piece ensemble are peerless, but many members of the band didn’t seem capable of outplaying the top Kansas City based jazz musicians.
